Toughening process involves heating and quenching of glass panels horizontally to induce compression stress to the outer surfaces of glass where the core assumes a compensating tension. This process improves the glass strength against impact and thermal stress loads.  Toughened glass is a safety glass which is approximately five times stronger than annealed glass and if broken, it shatters into small blunt pieces thus minimizing risk of injury.
